Now that we can all go out again, and weather’s getting warmer, outdoor attractions are a real draw. At this time of year, Pembrokeshire’s gardens are bursting into life and are a great place to visit if you’re looking for a day trip in the fresh air. We’ve got everything from quiet hidden gems to large stately gardens where the kids can run off steam. With plenty to see from now until autumn, we thought we’d compile a list of some of the best gardens in Pembrokeshire.
Dyffryn Fernant Gardens
Skirting the edge of the sweeping Preseli Hills just north of Fishguard, you’ll find Dyffryn Fernant Gardens, a pretty haven of peace and tranquillity with spectacular views of the surrounding area. As well as the gorgeous vistas, there are lots of quiet nooks amongst the plants where you can sit and while away a dreamy hour or two. Catering facilities aren’t available at present, but you can bring a picnic to enjoy down by the peaceful pond. Dogs are also welcome on short leads.
Hilton Court Gardens
Just a 25-minute drive from Rhosson Ganol in the lovely St Brides Bay lies Hilton Court Gardens. A popular place to visit for families, there are ponds, woodlands and several miniature houses in the grounds for children to explore. Another attraction is the Solar Dome which houses some fascinating semi-tropical plants and is a welcome suntrap on a chilly day. There is also a Woodland Tearoom on site, or you can grab a quick coffee or ice cream to enjoy in the gardens.
Picton Castle Gardens
A medieval castle that was transformed into a stately home during the 18th century, Picton Castle and its 40-acre gardens are well worth a visit. With stunning country views, a walled garden, endless woodland trails, children’s play areas, ponds and even a Welsh owl garden, there’s plenty going on. Whether you’re a keen gardener, nature lover or are looking for somewhere to enjoy a bit of family fun, Picton has plenty to offer. Takeaway refreshments are available in the courtyard café – and keep your eyes open for special events too.
Upton Castle Gardens
Known for its beautiful rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, Upton Castle Gardens is a real treat for keen horticulturalists. You can also take a lazy wander around the rose gardens and terraces as well as the walled garden and shady woodland trails. There’s also a café serving refreshments if you need a coffee, cake or ice cream break. Although Upton castle itself isn’t open to the public, the 35-acre grounds are a wonderful place to while away a few hours in spectacular surroundings.
